My kids sat down to eat dinner and Tyler said that the peas looked weird, and Austin asked why we were eating on small plates but other than that, they were non suspecting. I told them that I made these special Easter cupcakes for dessert and if they ate all their dinner, they could have one. I just waited patiently for them to take their first bite. The looks on their faces were priceless! I couldn't stop laughing to take a picture until they were almost done eating.
The "fish sticks" were those wafer cookies covered in peanut butter and then rolled in crushed corn flakes. The "Ketchup" was seedless strawberry jam just stirred up until it was the right consistency. The "mashed potatoes & gravy" was vanilla ice cream and Carmel sauce. The "peas" were green apple air head candy. The drink was supposed to be jello so they couldn't drink it, but that's the one thing I forgot to do ahead of time, so I didn't have time to let the jello set. So, I just put food coloring in their water. It still worked out perfect. They were not expecting water.
After a few minutes of eating a plate full of dessert, (when everyone was hungry for food) I told them they could have a cup cake. They totally fell for it again...they were expecting cupcakes! I love how gullible my kids are! (at least when it comes to me playing April Fools pranks on them) The "dessert" was really their dinner. The cupcakes were meat loaf, and the "frosting" was mashed potatoes! Who knew mashed potatoes would color so perfectly. I can't even get frosting to color that pretty! Ahh, I loved it. It was AWESOME!
"Wow, peas never tasted so good, Mom!"
"Hey, this doesn't taste like frosting. Something is wrong with these cupcakes!"
Everything looked so real, their taste buds just couldn't register what they were really eating. Jordan thought the frosting was Ketchup on top of their meatloaf. It was the perfect April Fools Dinner. I'm already plotting what I'm going to do next year. I can't wait!

Ha Ha! How funny! What a great idea!
I LOVE IT! I am still giggling. One year for halloween my friend and I made orange mashed potatoes - they still LOOKED like potatoes - just orange - and Brad could NOT eat them because it was sensory confusion for him. I can't IMAGINE the cupcake "surprise!" Funny funny funny. You are such a great mom.
That is awesome!!
