Tyler's favorite subjects are Science and Robotics. He went to a Robotics Tech Camp in Seattle about a year and a half ago. They taught him all about robotics and programing them. They used VEX kits and so after the camp, Tyler saved his money and bought him one. He has made a bunch of neat things with it over the past year. He never ceases to amaze me. Tyler has been in the GATE program for our school district for the past three years (Gifted And Talented Education). Every year they have an Invention Convention. This is Tyler's favorite event of GATE. He thinks about what he is going to do all year long. When he was in Fourth grade he came up with a way to power his gameboy using a solar panel. He said it was so if there were no outlets to charge your gameboy, you could still play it. In fifth grade he came up with a bicycle helmet that he attached all sorts of gadgets to like a water bottle that a straw came down to your mouth mechanically so you could get a drink while riding your bike. It also had sun glasses that flipped down automatically when you needed them. It had a mini fan that could cool you off, a flashlight so you could see the rode while riding at night and a radio so you could listen to music. All of these gadgets were ran by his VEX kit and he strapped the controller to the handlebars of his bike. It was quite the sight to see. I wish I would have taken a picture. I can't believe I didn't! This year in sixth grade he came up with his idea from hearing me constantly remind my kids to "flush & wash". So he invented a device that automatically locks the bathroom door from the outside so you can not leave the bathroom until you flush & wash. The dead bolt will release once the toilet flushes and the sink turns on. Of course this invention is just a model and I don't actually have one installed in my bathroom (It sure would be nice). But Tyler assures me he will be able to make one for real one day. In the picture on the left side of the board is a little Lego door that shuts, in the middle is the deadbolt that locks, and to the right is the handle that flushes the toilet. It is all run by his VEX kit. Tyler has made it to Regionals all three years. It is held at the ITECH here in Idaho Falls. It is this weekended and we are hoping he makes it to State in Boise this time since it's his last year in the elementary GATE Program. Good Luck Tyler!

Good luck Tyler, that looks pretty cool!
That is one smart kid you have!
I hope he makes it too! Good Luck! We are cheering for you Tyler!
Holy cow he is smart! I am seriously going to look into VEX kits for my son, Chandler. I have never heard of them before. He's in the 2nd grade and this would be perfect for his personality. That is so cool that you sent him to a Tech school and that he's in the GATE program. AWESOME!!
Hey Malinda, I hope you don't mind I took a peek at your blog. :o)
We are really excited for Tyler. I've been able to hear a little about it on they way home from band each week.
Tyler told me he thinks he might be more excited going to Boise than Disney Land.
GOOD LUCK IN BOISE TYLER!
