A new kitchen for Christmas

We went to Utah for the second weekend in a row. This time we went to my brother's house in Roy. My brother Anthony and his wife Jeanie have three boys and just moved into this cute little house about a month ago. It was built in the 60's and has a lot of cute things about it but needs a little updating. So, Ron and I went down there with all Ron's tools to help them out. We spent three days down there and got quite a bit done. Ron helped Anthony lay a new laminate floor that looks like hand scraped walnut. It is really pretty. Then we helped them rearrange their appliances. That took the longest time because they had to change the electrical to do it. They have a galley-style kitchen and their huge over-sized side by side refrigerator was right in the middle of it. It looked way too big for the space, and they had to take out cabinets to make it fit. Their oven was on the end which isn't the safest place when you have little kids rounding the corner and putting their hand on the stove top. So, we switched them places and it looks and fits a lot better. They also get to put their cabinets back in because now they fit above the oven. The most fun part for me was redoing their cabinets. They had just plain flat white cabinets with silver handles. The possibilities were endless! So, Jeanie and I finally decided on adding a piece of bead board in the center. Then Ron used his router on the edges and around the bead board. Next, we put a walnut stain on them and then rubbed it off. Jeanie did an awesome job with the handles. She primed them and then sprayed them with brown, then copper, and a little black. They came out so good. We even had Ron cut out the center of the cabinets on each side of the sink. Then we are going to put glass in them. Right now, her back splash is bead-board which is fine but whoever installed it did it horizontally instead of vertical, so it looks tacky. We got some paneling that looks like brick that we are going to put up instead. We didn't get to that this weekend, but I will post pictures when it is all done. I'm so excited for them. It's going to look so good.

You are so great! It's lucky for Ron that he married you - and don't let him forget it! I can't wait to see the finished pictures. When I saw your headline I thought you were talking about you and I had this thought - "Their kitchen is PERFECT! Why would they want to change it?" I'm glad to see you are helping the fam.
